A passion for coaching Special Olympic power lifters

Eric King of Scottsbluff started coaching Scotts Bluff County Thunder power lifters three years ago. He’s enjoyed building not just better lifters but also tight bonds with Special Olympic athletes that he says constantly brighten his day.

SCOTTSBLUFF – Eric King was sitting in a Panhandle Humane Society board meeting one day about four years ago when another board member, Charlie Kennedy, turned to King with a question.

Kennedy, the co-head of delegation for the Scotts Bluff County Thunder Special Olympics team, wanted to know if King would be interested in taking over the coaching duties for the Thunders’ power lifting squad.

“He said the current coach was retiring, and he knew I enjoyed lifting weights, so he thought I would be a good fit for the program,” King said. “It sounded like a lot of fun, so I said, ‘Yes.’”

King is now getting ready for his fourth season as a power lifting coach for the Thunder. The power lifting season goes from about December to May.
