SIDNEY – As a youngster, Mason Nightingale of Sidney enjoyed listening to her mom, Shannon Nightingale, talk about her experience as a high school cheerleader.

Mason, who’s now a senior at Sidney High School, was especially proud that her mom didn’t give up on her dream of becoming a cheerleader. Mason said her mom finally made the cheerleading squad after trying out three other times in high school.

“My mom could have given up, but she kept working hard and kept believing in herself, and she got to be a cheerleader for one year,” Mason said. “My mom was persistent, and she wanted me to be like that, too.”

Mason’s hope was to someday become a cheerleader just like her mom. But when she was little, Mason said she was shy and reserved. She didn’t like performing in front of people, so actually becoming a cheerleader didn’t seem like a realistic dream to her.

“But my mom encouraged me to give dancing a try,” Mason said. “She kept telling me I could do it.”
