Orion Yung of Torrington developed a passion for glass blowing when he was attending Kimball High School, and he still enjoys glass blowing nearly 50 years later. Over the years, he’s created a number of cool-looking items, including his favorites: windmills and ships. Each piece is unique and special, he said, and it’s the same way with his beautiful oil paintings, too.

TORRINGTON, Wyo. – Every once in awhile, Orion Yung would watch his high school chemistry teacher, Don Meyer, give glass blowing demonstrations, either at school or in the Kimball community, where Yung grew up.
Yung always admired Meyers’ skills.
“He was an amazing glass blower,” said Yung, who’s 68 now and lives in Torrington with his wife, Gwen. “He sold a lot of the items he made, and he also made a lot of stuff for his chemistry class, like all of the condensers.”
Another passion Meyers had was helping people, including those who wanted to know more about glass blowing. One day Yung decided to ask Meyers if he would teach him how to glass blow. Meyers, of course, said yes.
So, every day during’s Yung’s freshman year at Kimball High School, he and Meyers would practice glass blowing together during their free periods.
“He started me out with some basics, like using a benson burner and learning how to bend tubes,” Yung said. “I eventually progressed to Pyrex – hard glass. It was so much fun. I fell in love with it. I thought, ‘I can do this.’”
