A teacher and friend for life

Joyce Maser of Minatare has many fond memories of her former teacher, Shirley (Heimbuck) Goehring, when Maser attended Highland School in the 1950s. Nearly 60 years later, Maser and Goehring remain close friends, and Maser and many of her former classmates recently put together a memorable reunion for the 86-year-old Goehring, who they say made a big impact in their lives both in the classroom and outside the classroom.

MINATARE – Like most people, Joyce Maser of Minatare had a lot of teachers that she admired and was influenced by as she was growing up.

There was one teacher in particular, however, whom Maser especially admired. It was Shirley (Heimbuck) Goehring, who taught at country schools in Minatare from 1952 to 1958. Goehring taught five years at South Highland School before teaching one year at Highland School, which consisted of several area country schools that had decided to consolidate into one school.

“She always stuck out to me because she really had a personal interest in every student that she taught,” said Maser, who’s 73. “She wasn’t just a teacher. Yes, she wanted each student to do his or her best academically, and she wanted us to learn other things like good table manners and being respectful, but she also wanted to make a personal connection with each student and their family. She really wanted to get to know us. You could tell that she really cared about everyone.”
