Battling through adversity

Brittney Lopez, a senior at Torrington High School, always dreamed of someday playing softball in college. She thought her dream might be over after suffering three knee injuries and not being able to play a full season of softball the last five years. However, Lopez continued to work hard and stay motivated, which helped her to earn an opportunity to play college softball – at Northeastern Junior College. But even more important than that, she said, is that the tough times she’s gone through have helped her become a better, stronger person overall.

TORRINGTON, Wyo. – Brittney Lopez smiles when she thinks about where she’ll be and what she’ll be doing this fall.

The 2020 Torrington High School graduate plans to attend school at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado, and she’s also earned an opportunity to play softball there.

“It’s very exciting,” she said. “It feels great knowing I’ll have a chance to compete at the next level.”

For many high school students, getting a chance to play a sport in college is a dream come true. That’s certainly the case for Lopez, especially since the last few years she figured she had little to no chance of playing in college.

It’s not because she’s not talented enough. Far from it. She’s one of the top players, in fact, in the WyoBraska region.

Lopez, however, couldn’t help but doubt whether she would get an offer to play softball in college is due to having three knee injuries in the last five years – injuries that have prevented her from playing a full season of softball since the summer before her eighth-grade year.
