Blossoming into a talented trombone player

Kimball High School senior Nicole Delaplane played several different musical instruments in middle school before finding her most joy in playing the trombone. She’s worked hard to become one of the most talented trombone players in Nebraska, and her desire now is to pursue a music education degree so she can teach young people not only about music but also about what they need to do to succeed in life.

KIMBALL – When Kimball High School senior Nicole Delaplane decided to start playing a musical instrument in sixth grade, she wasn’t sure which instrument she should focus on. So, she ended up trying several different instruments, including the trumpet, French horn, and baritone.

“I jumped from one instrument to another because I thought it was really interesting to learn about the different instruments,” she said.

In eighth grade, she decided to try yet another instrument – the trombone. She loved it – so much so, in fact, that she stuck with the trombone longer than any other instrument she had played. The reason, she said, is she liked using the slide.

“You can do a lot of fun things with the slide. When you slide from one note to the other, it sounds really cool,” she said. “Also, I’ve heard a lot of professional musicians play the trombone, and I thought it was very cool how well they played. I wanted to be as good as they were.”
