Building his own tiny, dream house

Sam Landers of Gering has always wanted to live a simple, debt-free life so he can afford and have time to enjoy traveling and doing other things he enjoys. That became even more important to him about three years ago when he suffered a subdural hematoma. Realizing just how short life can be, he decided to pursue his dream of building his own tiny home, which he says will allow him to have the time and money to live his life to its fullest.

GERING – About six years ago, Sam Landers of Gering started thinking seriously about his future, particularly how he wanted to live his life.

He considered being a massage therapist, but beyond that, he mostly wanted to be able to truly enjoy life outside of work. One thing he definitely wanted to do was travel a lot to different places around the world.

In order for that to become a reality, though, he felt like he had to be debt-free so he could afford to travel without taking out loans. He also wanted to live a simple life at home so he could have more time to travel and do other activities he enjoyed.

How could he accomplish that? One way, he thought, was to build his own tiny home. If he did that, he wouldn’t have a mortgage payment, and he wouldn’t have to pay much money, if any, to rent a small piece of land to put his tiny home on.

“The thought of not having a big mortgage payment holding me down was really exciting to me,” said Landers, a 2008 Scottsbluff High School graduate who’s been practicing massage therapy in Scottsbluff since 2014 and has been at Marla’s Massage & Skincare Studio since 2018. “My dream was to live in a nice, simple place and still be able to do all the fun, interesting things that I wanted to do. It was just an idea that I started tossing around, but I wasn’t completely serious about it at the time.”

A few years later, though, something happened that made Landers decide to go ahead and build his own tiny home.
