Charles Schiaffo-Twarling, a 17-year-old boy from Hay Springs, survived a scare a little over a year ago when he was injured during a high school football game and ended up having a severe brain injury. Schiaffo-Twarling, who’s now a junior at Hay Springs High School, no longer plays football due to his risk of suffering another brain injury, but he’s not unhappy, for he said the adversity he’s faced in the last year has taught him what’s really important in life.

HAY SPRINGS – Charles Schiaffo-Twarling could feel the adrenalin flowing through his body as he eagerly waited for Minatare’s offense to snap the football.
Schiaffo-Twarling, a then 16-year-old sophomore who was playing middle linebacker at Hay Springs High School, kept his eyes on the running back, who took the handoff before bouncing outside to try to pick up a big gain.
Schiaffo-Twarling read the play well and quickly raced over to tackle the ball carrier. He latched on to the running back with a firm grip and began bringing him down. Meanwhile, Schiaffo-Twarling’s teammates had rushed over to help and assisted Schiaffo-Twarling with making the tackle.
As the Hawks were bringing Minatare’s running back down, however, Schiaffo-Twarling was accidentally hit hard in the head by another player.
