MITCHELL – For most of his high school career, Joe Schumacher thought he had his future planned out.

After graduating from Minatare High School in 1999, he was going to go to college to earn a broadcasting degree.

But a few months before graduating from high school, Schumacher met a Navy recruiter, and that meeting changed his career plans – drastically.

“He showed me travel pictures from all over the world that he had experienced while being in the Navy, so that really excited me,” he said. “Plus, he told me about the benefits, including the money I could earn for college, so I figured I would try that.”

Schumacher enlisted into the Navy shortly after graduating from Minatare High School, and for the next nine years, he traveled around the world, serving his country while having a blast meeting people from many different cultures. Altogether, he visited more than 40 countries during his time in the Navy.

“I had a lot of great experiences,” he said. “I really enjoyed moving around the world.”
