FEATURE: Alliance teenager develops a talent for showing cattle and hogs – and cooking, too

Jayce Meyring, a 2021 Alliance High School graduate, has enjoyed lots of success in 4-H over the years, including winning a number of ribbons showing cattle and hogs. There’s something else, though, that he’s been quite successful at and just as passionate about – cooking. He’s earned lots of honors in that area, too, in 4-H, including putting together an award-winning recipe file that’s filled with his favorite meals, side dishes, and treats. Although he doesn’t plan to compete in food competitions anymore – he’s focused on competing on the livestock judging team at Butler Community College in Kansas – he said he’ll always have a love for cooking and is eager to add to his recipe file collection.

ALLIANCE – When Jayce Meyring heads off to college this fall, there’s a lot of things he’ll miss about being on his family’s ranch northeast of Alliance.

One of them is his mom’s home cooking.

“My mom [Shauna Meyring] is a great cook, and she’s very passionate about it, too,” said Jayce, who graduated from Alliance High School in May. “For as long as I can remember, she’s enjoyed being creative in the kitchen. She always puts her own special touch on recipes, whether it’s dinner or dessert, and it’s so good. You can’t beat her homemade cooking.”

His mom’s passion for cooking, Jayce said, stems from her wanting to make other people happy.

“She cares about food, but she cares more about making people happy, so one of the ways she does that is by making good food for people,” he said. “If she can make someone else happy, then she’s happy.”

His mom’s cooking skills – and her desire to use those skills to bring joy to others – caught Jayce’s attention at an early age. He wanted to help his mom in the kitchen, and she encouraged him and his siblings – Jayda, who’s now a junior at Alliance High School, and Seth, a freshman at Alliance High School – to do just that.

“My mom always wanted us to help her make things,” Jayce said. “For her, cooking was even more fun when she got the kids involved. I definitely enjoyed helping her.”
