FEATURE: ‘An amazing experience’ for people with special needs

When Mollie and Eric Packer moved to Sidney about five years ago, they wanted to help start a summer baseball program designed for people with special needs. With the help of Adams Industries and many other volunteers, the Packers saw their dream turn into a reality this summer as the Sidney Angels League started. The Packers want the league, which already has more than 30 special needs players, to be an annual event in Sidney. They also hope its success inspires other communities in the area to start their own Angels League to give even more people with special needs an opportunity to have fun playing baseball.

SIDNEY – When Mollie and Eric Packer’s family lived in Saint Anthony, Idaho, about five years ago, one of the programs they got involved in was the Saint Anthony Angels Baseball League.

The league, which at the time was in its first year, was designed for people with special needs to have a few nights of fun during the summer playing low-key baseball games. The Packers’ two, young sons – Nathan and Russell, who both have autism – played in the league.

“They had so much fun,” Eric said. “They really got into it and loved it, and it was very safe.”
