At one point in her life, Stephanie Perkins of Bayard was working full time in the mortgage business. She decided to become a volunteer firefighter, though, and she ended up enjoying it so much that she’s now spent the last five years focusing on helping people as a first responder in Bayard.

BAYARD – Stephanie Perkins was in the mortgage business, but she made a decision that changed the direction of her career.
She joined the Bayard Fire Department in 2007.
“They needed EMTs and were recruiting. I had some people talk me into it,” she said. “I was pretty much nervous. I didn’t know much about it. I went and did my first call on EMS (emergency medical service) before I even took the class. After taking the class, it just kind of hit – this was something I really loved to do.”
