FEATURE: Discovering a love for being a school nurse

Sierra Frickey always knew she wanted to go into the medical field, but being a school nurse never crossed her mind until about a year and a half ago, when her sister-in-law told her about a school nurse position that was open at Morrill Public Schools. Although Frickey loved her job at the time, working as a RN in the ICU unit at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, she decided to pursue the school nurse job. She’s glad she did, for now she couldn’t imagine not helping kids as a school nurse.

MORRILL – Sierra Frickey sat comfortably in a chair in her office at Morrill Elementary School, smiling as little kids started flowing into the building for the start of another school day.

She knew it would be just a matter of time before some students started coming into her office, and she was right. Over the next 30 minutes or so, a handful of students walked into her office, with a couple of them needing to take some medication and another one needing some anti-itch cream for a bug bite. A couple others came in seeking attention for minor scrapes and bruises.

For Frickey, it was just the start of a typical day for her as the nurse for Morrill Public Schools.

“I probably see 40 to 50 kids in the district every day,” she said nonchalantly. “I stay plenty busy.”

She wouldn’t want it any other way, though.
