FEATURE: Grateful for a memorable and rewarding nursing career

Wendy Lewandowski was a star athlete at Mitchell High School who planned to continue her sports career in college before becoming a PE teacher. However, a devastating injury her high school senior year ended her athletic dreams and also caused her to change her career plans. She decided to become a nurse instead, and she’s glad she did because she enjoyed a wonderful 44 years in nursing, including the last 34 years as a school nurse in Torrington, before retiring this summer.

TORRINGTON – Going through her senior year at Mitchell High School, Wendy Lewandowski knew exactly what she was going to do after graduation.

One of the Panhandle’s most talented female athletes at the time, Lewandowski was excited to continue her athletic career in college, especially since she had been receiving lots of athletic scholarship offers. She was a standout hitter on Mitchell’s successful volleyball teams – the 1972 squad even claimed the school’s first state title – and she ranked in the top 10 on the Nebraska high school track and field leaders chart in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

And because of her love of sports, Lewandowski planned to become a physical education teacher after her athletic career was over.

“I had everything planned out at that point,” she said.
