Chadron High School sophomore Kaylie Phillips has been quite successful at showing livestock, especially lambs, in 4-H the last eight years. She doesn’t look at her livestock as just animals, though. She sees her lambs and cattle as ‘friends’ that she’s developed a close connection with. It’s because of that bond, she said, that she’s been able to have success in 4-H not only locally and regionally but also nationally.

CHADRON – Whenever Kaylie Phillips steps into the show ring for a 4-H competition, she doesn’t look at her lambs and cattle as just animals.
“I feel like I’m going in there with a friend,” said the sophomore at Chadron High School, who’s in her eighth year in 4-H.
That makes sense, considering the hours she spends with her lambs and cattle each week.
“I spend a lot of time in the barn with them, so you can’t help but form a close bond with them,” she said. “They’re not just my 4-H animals, they’re my pets. They follow me around and come to me when I call them. I enjoy that part of it – connecting with my animals – more than anything else. ”
