FEATURE: ‘I feel lucky that she was my mentor’

Sheila Johns of Gering became a TeamMates mentor to Bella Groskopf when Groskopf was a third-grader at Longfellow Elementary School in Scottsbluff. Johns continued to be a mentor to Groskopf through the rest of her elementary school, middle school and high school years. Groskopf, who graduated from SHS in May, said she’s grateful for the loving support and advice she’s received from Johns over the years, but more importantly, she’s grateful for the close friendship that the two have developed and will continue to have for the rest of their lives.

SCOTTSBLUFF – Sheila Johns of Gering was talking to one of her friends one day in 2011 when the TeamMates Mentoring program got brought up.

Johns’ friend was a TeamMates mentor at the time, and she mentioned to Johns that the organization was looking for more mentors.

Johns immediately considered joining the group, especially since she had been a volunteer in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America youth mentoring program when she lived in Wyoming.

“I had really enjoyed being a mentor,” Johns said. “That kind of volunteer work is something that I was really interested in, so I didn’t have to spend of lot of time thinking about whether I should become a TeamMates mentor. I wanted to help fulfill a need.”
