Michael Morgan, a senior at Morrill High School, had always dreamed of someday competing at the Nebraska state wrestling tournament. That became even more important to him about a year and a half ago when he learned that his dad, who has always been one of his biggest supporters, had cancer. Although the last year hasn’t been easy for Michael and his family while his dad battled cancer, Michael wanted to fulfill a promise he had made to his dad – to qualify for state wrestling. He managed to achieve that feat in February, and it was a moment that he and his dad and his entire family will never forget.

TORRINGTON, Wyo. – Michael Morgan of Torrington tried his best to keep his focus on school and wrestling, but in the back of his mind, he was wondering how his dad, Ben Morgan, was doing.

The older Morgan hadn’t been feeling well, so he went to the doctor one afternoon in early December 2020 to see what was going on.

“I was hoping it wouldn’t be anything too serious,” Michael said.

But later in the day, Michael received a text from his mom – a text that shattered his life. His father, she told her son, had been diagnosed with spleen cancer.

“My heart just dropped, and I started crying,” Michael said. “I thought I was going to lose my dad.”
