Shane Harsh of Scottsbluff is in his 15th year with the Nebraska Army National Guard, and he’s now getting ready to be deployed for what could be the longest time he’s ever been away from his family. But while he said he’ll greatly miss his wife and their two children while he’s gone, he’s looking forward to serving his country during his deployment.

SCOTTSBLUFF – When Shane Harsh of Scottsbluff enlisted into the Nebraska Army National Guard on Feb. 22, 2006, he knew there would be times when he would have to be away from his wife, Heather, and their two children, ReBanna and Brycen.
Once a month, for example, Harsh knew he would have to spend a weekend in Lincoln doing National Guard duties. He also knew he would have to devote a two-week stretch each year for a National Guard assignment outside the Scottsbluff/Gering area.
Fortunately, in the last 15 years he’s been part of the Nebraska Army National Guard, he and his family have handled those brief separations from each other well.
“It’s hard anytime you have to leave your family, but I understand and they understand that it’s something I have to do from time to time,” he said. “When I am gone, we always keep in touch as much as we can, and everyone understands that we’ll get together and do some fun things when I get back home.”
