FEATURE: ‘I’m happy it’s back’

The Old West Balloon Races started in the Scottsbluff/Gering area in 1983, and the hot air balloon event continued until the early 1990s. Old West Balloon Fest was re-inflated in 2015, and hot air balloons have been filling the sky in Scotts Bluff County every year since then. That’s brought smiles to a lot of people in the area, including Nellie and Gene Frizzell of Scottsbluff, who have attended every hot air balloon event held in the area.

SCOTTSBLUFF – Nellie Frizzell of Scottsbluff remembers feeling excited when she found out that a hot air balloon event was being planned for the Scottsbluff/Gering area in September 1983.

“I was looking forward to it because it was going to be something really different,” she said. “There had never been anything like that in our area before that I was aware of. So, I thought it was going to be a really fun event for the whole community.”
