Jeff Gaiser of Scottsbluff fell ill with COVID-19 in October, and a couple weeks later he suffered a heart attack, forcing him to have emergency heart surgery in Colorado. Jeff managed to recover from that surgery, and now he feels more blessed than ever to still get to spend time with his wife and to get to do the things he enjoys doing, such as serving at his church and volunteering for the Scottsbluff/Gering Lions Club.

SCOTTSBLUFF – Toward the end of October, Jeff and Cynde Gaiser of Scottsbluff started to feel like they had a mild case of the flu.
As a precautionary measure, they both got checked for COVID-19 on Oct. 26, and one day later, they learned that they had both tested positive for the virus.
The Gaisers were told to go home and self isolate for two weeks. For most of that time, neither Jeff nor Cynde experienced severe symptoms.
However, toward the end of that two-week period, Jeff started to feel chest pains. The pains gradually got worse to the point where he grimaced in severe pain, prompting Cynde to take her husband to the emergency room at Regional West Medical Center.
Tests showed that Jeff had an irregular, rapid heart beat, known as atrial fibrillation. He later was also diagnosed with pneumonia.
“I was in pretty bad shape,” he said.
