FEATURE: ‘It’s something I feel I was born to do’

Jack Schaaf played in his first band when he attended Scottsbluff High School, and he’s continued to live his dream – playing music – in a number of local bands over the last two decades. Schaaf, a talented guitar player and singer who recently released his first solo album, is currently part of two local bands that he helped start: The Greendales and The Vellichors. Local music fans will get a chance to see Schaaf and The Greendales perform July 15 as part of the Bands on Broadway concert series in downtown Scottsbluff.

SCOTTSBLUFF – Jack Schaaf was a pretty good drummer in middle school, but one day he couldn’t resist the urge to try playing his sister’s guitar.

“She had a crappy guitar that she had found at a garage sale, and I picked it up one day and started messing around with it,” he said. “I really liked it, so I tried teaching myself how to play it.”

Schaaf didn’t take any guitar lessons, but he did have some friends who played the guitar and were willing to show him how to play a few chords.

“I picked up on things pretty quickly,” he said. “I happened to have a really good ear for that stuff. It came naturally to me.”
