FEATURE: Mitchell woman ‘determined to make it work’

Della Joy Stevens, who moved with her husband, Craig, from Trinidad, Colorado, to Mitchell about a year and a half ago, decided earlier this year to start a farmer’s market in Mitchell. One reason is so she could have a market in her hometown to sell her homemade soaps, lotions and other skin care products. There was another, bigger reason, though, that she wanted to start a market – to help other vendors have a place to sell their products and also to do something nice in the community of Mitchell. The Mitchell Market, which is held every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Centennial Park, started June 18, and since then it’s continued to grow in popularity.

MITCHELL – When Della Joy Stevens and her husband, Craig, decided to retire in early 2020 after running a successful, five-star restaurant for seven years in Trinidad, Colorado, they wanted to sell their business and home in Trinidad and move somewhere outside of Colorado where the cost of living was lower.

“We liked Trinidad, but what we really wanted was to live debt free,” Stevens said. “So, part of our plan was to find another nice place to live but where we wouldn’t have to pay a mortgage.”

The place the Stevens had planned to move to was Lincoln, New Mexico. That’s where they intended to purchase the historic Wortley Hotel, which was being run as a bed and breakfast.

“We thought it would be fun to do that type of thing and serve people breakfast and lunch,” Della said. “We were really serious about it. In fact, we even made an offer on the place, contingent on the sale of our home.”
