Ever since she was a little kid, Tammy Cooley of Morrill has always wanted to be a restaurant owner. At 54 years old, her dream is finally becoming a reality as she’s now the co-owner of Backaracks Steakhouse & Grill in Scottsbluff along with Rachel Sams.

SCOTTSBLUFF – Growing up, Tammy Cooley spent a considerable amount of time at different restaurants in the area.
That was understandable considering her parents, Ronn Schmidt and Rita Schwab, owned several of them, including an A&W Restaurant in Morrill from 1976 to 1983. Her grandparents, the late Harry and Irene Schmidt, were also heavily involved in the restaurant business, including owning and operating the Chuckwagon buffet-style restaurant on East Overland many years ago.
Cooley said she didn’t mind often hanging out with her parents and grandparents at their restaurants. In fact, she dreamed of owning her own restaurant someday.
“I’ve always loved the restaurant atmosphere,” said the 54-year-old Cooley, who was born and raised in Morrill and still lives there today. “Certain restaurants have certain clientele, and I enjoyed seeing the socialization and bond that exists among the owners, their employees, and their customers. I also liked watching my parents and grandparents provide excellent service and good food to their customers. I thought it was exciting. So, that’s what I wanted to do when I got older.”
