MITCHELL – There are grandstand events every night of the Scotts Bluff County Fair in Mitchell, and none of those events would take place if it weren’t for the tireless volunteer efforts of Dave Keener.

Keener was raised on his family’s ranch 35 miles north of Scottsbluff, and he runs the same ranch to this day.

“I’ve been on the ranch all my life,” said Keener. “That’s my main job, I run the family ranch for my mom.”

Keener also runs a feedlot and has a trucking company.

“I drive the truck for supplying needs to our farm and feedlot,” said Keener. “That’s the main focus of the trucking company. I’m also a director on the Niobrara Electric Board out of Lusk. It’s where we get our power from out of Wyoming. So, that occupies part of my time, going to meetings and running that organization. And that puts me on some other boards statewide and a national board. If I’m not doing one thing, I’m going somewhere else.”

Despite his busy career, Keener still finds time to volunteer for the fair.

“I don’t even know how many years I’ve been doing it,” said Keener. “It’s got to be close to twenty years I suppose, a long time. I’ve been involved with the Rubber Check Race ever since its conception. When Larson started it, he recruited me and all the Keener boys.”
