FEATURE: ‘My enjoyment in this comes from watching other people be happy’

Echojean ‘Penny’ Fields of Henry never imagined she would own her own business, especially after she retired at age 69 after a long career at Kurt Manufacturing in Lyman. Fields, however, said she became bored after retiring and wanted to find something fun to do. She ended up opening a ceramic painting store in downtown Scottsbluff five years ago, and she’s still running that business today. She said she doesn’t do it to make money, especially since she doesn’t charge much more than what she pays for the ceramics and paint. The reason she keeps the store open, she said, is simply because she enjoys meeting and visiting with people and doing something that brings joy to others, especially children.

HENRY – When Echojean “Penny” Fields retired from her 27-year career as a quality control inspector at Kurt Manufacturing in Lyman in 2013, she figured she would spend the rest of her life taking it easy, not doing anything too big.

Her mindset changed, however, not even two months after she retired.

“I got really bored,” she said. “I was ready to climb the walls.”
