FEATURE: Realizing her talent and potential as an artist

Sarah Reinhardt of Mitchell was a little girl when she developed a deep passion for drawing. She continued to draw as she got older, earning lots of compliments for her artwork along the way. She never thought she would use her art skills much as an adult, though, and for about 10 years, she didn’t spend too much time on art because she was busy working as a nurse and raising four kids with her husband. A few years ago, however, the 35-year-old Reinhardt participated in a paint party that re-ignited her passion for art. She’s now drawing and painting more often now, and her husband even helped her build her own impressive-looking art studio in the upstairs of their barn. She has plans to enter one or two paintings in an art show at the West Nebraska Arts Center this summer, and she also hopes to start hosting her own paint parties soon. Becoming a full-time artist isn’t out of the question for her, either, which is something she once never dreamed would be possible.

MITCHELL – Growing up, Sarah Reinhardt and her siblings never had a lot of toys to play with. But she did have pencils and crayons, and she would use them every day – for hours.

“We grew up really poor, so for fun, I either had to go outside and play with things like sticks, or I could stay inside and draw,” she said. “I took an interest in drawing as soon as I was old enough to grab onto something, and that’s what I did most of the time when I was little. I loved doodling.”

Her mom certainly encouraged it.

“She would hand me a pencil, and I would be content for two hours straight, which was nice for her because she could do housework without getting interrupted,” Reinhardt said with a laugh. “My mom has always said that nothing else in the world made me as happy as drawing.”
