Jack Baker of Scottsbluff was hospitalized for two weeks earlier this year while battling COVID. He said that actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise because when a CAT scan was performed, he learned he had something else that needed immediate attention – a rare type of cancer. He had open heart surgery in June to remove the cancer, and he’s now back to being happy and healthy. Battling COVID and cancer, though, has forever changed his perspective on life, for he’s now even more grateful for all the good things in his life.

SCOTTSBLUFF – On the last day of February – just a couple weeks after his father-in-law, Gary Eskam, had passed away – Jack Baker of Scottsbluff started developing a fever, and he also was having a little trouble breathing.
He figured he probably had the flu or possibly even COVID.
“I thought if it was COVID, I’ll be careful and stay away from people,” he said.
Over the next few days, Baker stayed home, drinking lots of fluids and resting as much as he could. It seemed to be working, as he felt better on Friday, March 5. But a couple days later – on Sunday, March 7 – he felt worse than before. His head was pounding, and he also had a bad cough, which was compounded by him having trouble catching his breath.
“At that point, I knew I needed to go to the hospital to see what was going on,” he said.
