FEATURE: Special Olympics helps Torrington boy blossom as an athlete – and as a person

15-year-old EJ Haas has captured numerous state medals in the last five years as a member of Goshen County’s Special Olympics team. But his greatest achievement, his parents say, is how he’s developed into the kind, caring, fun-loving, and outgoing person he is today.

TORRINGTON, Wyo. – Ronda Haas and her husband, Ed, smile widely when they watch their 15-year-old son, EJ, on the soccer field or the basketball court.

EJ, who is autistic and has ADHD, loves participating in those activities, especially when he gets to joke or talk to his coaches and teammates. He’s also developed into a fierce competitor – someone who’s determined to try to be the best.

“We’ve seen him grow by leaps and bounds in so many ways,” said Ronda, whose family lives in Torrington.
