FEATURE: ‘To me, this is much more than just a job’

Haley Collins suffered head trauma and other serious injuries in a four wheeler accident about six years ago. Fortunately, the 2016 Mitchell High School graduate was able to recover from that accident, and she believes part of the reason she was able to get back on her feet – and have a more positive outlook on life – was due to getting a job at Sam & Louie’s. Collins, who was a server for four years before being promoted to manager a year ago and then the general manager on Jan. 1, said she’s enjoyed growing as a person and developing fun connections with co-workers and customers at the downtown Scottsbluff restaurant.

SCOTTSBLUFF – Shortly after the final bell rang, signaling the end of the school day, Haley Collins hopped in her car and drove to a friend’s house out in the country to ride four wheelers.

The weather was beautiful on this sunny day in April 2015. Collins smiled and laughed as she whisked around on her four wheeler, and her friends did the same on their four wheelers.

After awhile, they rode out to check on some cattle before turning back around. On the way back, Collins drove through some taller grass, cruising at about 45 miles per hour.

She didn’t sense any danger ahead, but suddenly, her four wheeler struck something on the ground. The jolt caused her body to fly forcefully off the four wheeler. She hit the ground hard, tumbling several times before finally coming to a stop.

She was knocked unconscious, and she later learned that she had suffered a number of severe injuries, including three broken ribs, a lacerated liver, and the worst part – a traumatic brain injury.

“Doctors said my brain hit my skull with such force that it was like suffering road rash on the brain,” she said.
