FEATURE: Turning her pain into a drive to help other people

Shebly Price, a secretary at Sidney High School, has suffered through a number of tragedies in the last 17 years, including watching her house burn down, losing her mom to cancer, losing her brother to suicide, losing her dad in a drowning, losing her stepdad to cancer, and then losing her nephew when he was murdered. She relied on her faith as well as support from her friends, family and co-workers to help her get through those difficult times, and she did something else to cope with the pain – she dedicated her life to trying to uplift other people, especially students in Sidney. Price is now in her fifth year as the director of Unified Raiders, a school program whose mission includes encouraging students and providing them with mentoring and tutoring opportunities; giving students a place to do fun activities in a safe and comfortable environment; and doing student-led service projects that make a big difference not only at school but also in the community.

SIDNEY – Shelby Price of Sidney doesn’t expect – or want – empathy from people because of the heartache she’s experienced in her life.

There’s no question, though, that Price has suffered through an extraordinary number of tragic events in her life, especially in the last 17 years.
