FOCUS ON FAITH COLUMN BY CAROLYN LEWIS: Is this a trial or a trail?

I learned a lot about following a trail when I was just seven years old. We moved from a city in Iowa to live on a mountain in Evergreen, Colorado.

It was quite a steep mountain and there was a dirt road up to it. There were only two houses on our side. We had a very small but nice pine house with electricity, but no well or water to it, so my dad hauled water every day in two milk cans. That was all we had. My mom washed our clothes in two wash tubs on the kitchen table, and my dad made a clothesline for her to hang things on beside our house.

We had to get used to a new way to wash ourselves, and wash our hair and brush our teeth. But it wasn’t as hard on me as I was so young. But we also had to get used to an outhouse! And it snowed a lot in the winter, and the trail to the outhouse was steep and slick, so we had to be careful.
