FOCUS ON FAITH FEATURE: ‘Being a pastor was my calling’

Garry Schick of Scottsbluff felt called to serve in ministry when he was in middle school, and for the last 30-plus years, he’s been a pastor at churches in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Nebraska. He’s currently in his fifth year as the senior pastor at Emmanuel Congregational Church in Scottsbluff.

SCOTTSBLUFF – Garry Schick has always been open to whatever plans God has for him.

For most of his life, though, Schick’s direction in life hasn’t changed much. His main mission has been to lead others to Christ.

It all started in 1971, when Schick, who was only 8 years old, accepted Christ at a Billy Graham crusade.

From there, Schick was driven to not only learn more about Jesus himself, but to share the good news about Christ with other people who would listen to him.

Schick felt blessed to be surrounded by many other followers of Christ while growing up in Park Ridge, Illinois. He remembers joining a large youth choir in sixth grade, and the youth group he was involved in continued to grow over the years. By the time Schick reached high school, his youth group consisted of about 600 kids.

“That was a time when the Jesus movement was in full swing,” said the 58-year-old Schick, who’s been the senior pastor at Emmanuel Congregational Church in Scottsbluff for the last five years.
