Jesus’ parable of the sower casting seed is found in the first three Gospels and was considered by Christ to be the simplest lesson for His disciples to understand.
After hearing and fruitlessly pondering the meaning of it, they asked Jesus to explain it to them. “Do you not understand this parable?” He asked. “How then will you understand all the parables” (Mark 4:13). I suspect that reprimand stung a little bit, but it was intended to hurt their feelings, so as to get their attention.
Jesus didn’t call these men to follow Him because He needed some company. He fully expected them to be picking up on the meaning of His lessons so that they would live them as well as pass them on to others when He had gone.
