‘He saved his daddy’s life’

Julian Murillo, a 16-year-old boy from Gering who has Down syndrome, reacted quickly by calling his mom for help when he saw his dad become unresponsive after his blood sugar level dropped considerably on Sept. 25. Murillo’s actions, his mom believes, were both remarkable and life-saving.

GERING – Noberta Murillo was just about ready to end her shift at Western Nebraska Veterans Home in Scottsbluff on Sept. 25 when her cell phone began to ring.

She normally doesn’t answer her cell phone at work, but since she was so close to getting off work, she decided to see who was calling her. It was her 16-year-old son, Julian Murillo, who has Down syndrome. Julian was at his dad’s house in Gering.

Noberta was surprised to receive a phone call from her son, not only because he doesn’t have his own cell phone but also because Noberta didn’t think her son would know how to get her number from his dad’s phone.

“He knows me as ‘mom,’ but he must have remembered my name in order to find it on his dad’s phone,” she said. “I was like, ‘Wow,’ I’m really proud of him for remembering how to call me.”

Noberta’s feeling of surprise quickly turned into concern, though, because Julian didn’t call her just to talk. He called to let her know that something was very wrong with his dad.

“He kept saying, ‘Mommy, daddy won’t wake up. He won’t wake up,’” Noberta said.
