SCOTTSBLUFF – Toward the end of the school year in 2001, Emma Duarte walked into the teacher’s copy room at Roosevelt Elementary School in Scottsbluff and noticed a job posting on the wall for summer staff members at Camp Scott, a local five-week summer program for handicapped children.

Duarte, who at the time was a para educator at Roosevelt School, was intrigued by the job posting. She loved being around children, and she had a soft spot in her heart for children with disabilities.

“I thought it would be something neat to look into,” said Duarte, who’s now a full-time secretary for Scottsbluff Public Schools. “I thought it could be a really rewarding experience.”
