Haden Scherbarth, a 2017 Bayard High School graduate who’s a senior at UNK, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in December. Scherbarth, however, has a bright outlook, and although he wishes he didn’t have to battle cancer, he’s grateful he’s developed a deeper appreciation for life through his battle with cancer.

BAYARD – After taking 18 credit hours in the fall at the University of Nebraska at Kearney while also working part-time 15 to 25 hours per week at RYDE Transit in Kearney, Haden Scherbarth of Bayard looked forward to relaxing and spending time with his family and friends during Thanksgiving break.
A few days before Thanksgiving, however, Scherbarth became concerned when he discovered a lump on the left side of his neck, just above his collarbone. He told some of his friends at UNK about it.
“I have a lot of friends who are studying to become doctors or nurses, and at first they told me not to worry about it,” said Scherbarth, a 2017 Bayard High School graduate. “They said it probably wasn’t anything bad.”
He wanted to believe them; however, he had a feeling that the lump might be something serious.
“I didn’t know exactly what it was, but when I found that unexplained lump on my skin, I right away started thinking it was cancer,” he said. “I just had that sick feeling inside me that that’s what it was.”
