‘I love making connections with animals’

James Bruner, a senior at Scottsbluff High School, has always loved animals, and his goal is to study animals for a career. He’s currently gaining experience working with animals as an intern at Riverside Zoo in Scottsbluff, and he’ll continue to help at the zoo until he leaves for college next year to major in biology and eventually become an ethologist.

SCOTTSBLUFF – As a little boy growing up in Omaha, one of James Bruner’s favorite things to do was go to the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium.

During the summer, he and his mom, Deidra Bruner, would go there almost every day.

“I loved being around all of those animals,” he said. “I really liked watching the polar bears and the tigers – especially the white tigers – and I also really enjoyed going into the reptile area. Really, though, I loved spending time around all the animals – both the big ones and the small ones. It gave us something fun to do during the summer, and we also learned a lot there, too.”

As Bruner grew older, he never lost his deep interest in all kinds of animals.
