‘I want to help build this restaurant into something even bigger than it already is’

James Montoya Jr. worked at several restaurants in Denver before coming to Scottsbluff. He’s now in his second year as the executive chef at The Tangled Tumbleweed, and he said it’s the best job he’s ever had in many ways. He said he loves creating food items that leave people smiling and talking about it even after they leave the popular, tapas-style restaurant.

SCOTTSBLUFF – When James Montoya Jr. graduated from Bear Creek High School in Lakewood, Colorado, in 2011, he was interested in becoming an EMT and a firefighter.

He was familiar with the profession because his dad, James Montoya Sr., had gone through some fire training and also because his stepdad, Warren Mitchell, was part of the Denver Fire Department’s upper management team.

“I really thought it was going to be my calling, too,” said Montoya Jr., who’s 28 now and lives in Scottsbluff. “I figured that’s what I would probably do for the rest of my life.”
