‘I’m definitely in it for the kids’

Barb Becker of Scottsbluff started playing the piano when she was 7 years old, and she grew up wanting to be involved in music as a career. She became the piano accompanist for Scottsbluff High School in 1989, and she’s remained in that position since then. She said she’s looking forward to beginning her 32nd year at SHS this fall not only because she loves playing the piano but also because she loves helping students learn to love and appreciate music, too.

SCOTTSBLUFF – Barb Becker of Scottsbluff has always loved music, especially playing the piano.

“My mom always wanted to play the piano, but she never had the opportunity, so she made sure all of her kids had the opportunity,” said Becker, who started taking piano lessons when she was 7 years old. “I had two older brothers who were amazing pianists, so I just followed in their footsteps.”

As she grew older, Becker became more interested in music, and she even began playing the oboe, too, when she was in seventh grade.

By the time Becker graduated from Scottsbluff High School in 1977, she had made up her mind that she wanted to be involved in music for a career. Therefore, she went to the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley to pursue a music major.
