‘I’m going to fight this hard’

Gering’s Randy Donelson, who’s been involved with wrestling most of his life, vows to use the same determination that he used as a wrestler and as a coach to overcome the biggest battle he’s faced in life – overcoming colon cancer

GERING – When it comes to wrestling, it would be hard to find someone more dedicated and determined than Randy Donelson of Gering.

He’s been involved in wrestling since he was 3 years old, and after starring as an athlete, even winning state and national championships, he got involved in coaching, including spending nine years at Mitchell and the last four years at Gering.

As an athlete, Donelson relished the opportunity to take down big obstacles in front of him, and as a coach, he’s pushed his athletes to have no fear while giving everything they’ve got on the mat.

“I’ve always told the kids to always work hard and to never give up,” he said. “I say, ‘It’s not going to be easy, but you can do this. Fight hard for the win.’”

At 46 years old, Donelson finds himself relying on those same phrases to boost himself as he faces the biggest battle of his life. In March, he learned that he has stage IIIB colon cancer.

“I just need to put the gloves on and say, ‘Let’s fight this,’” he said.

During this difficult time, Donelson won’t be able to work at his job at High Plains Budweiser in Scottsbluff. Not being able to work will create a financial hardship for his family, so friends and relatives have set up a Go Fund Me Facebook page that people may access by going to Donelson’s Facebook page. People can also access information about the “Team Randy” T-shirt fundraiser on his Facebook page.
