‘I’m grateful God is giving me this second chance’

When Craig Schadwinkel of Gering suffered a heart attack in late October, he didn’t know if he would live to see another day. However, he was able to get to the hospital in time to receive the treatment he needed, and he’s now on his way to making a full recovery. He said he feels blessed that he’s able to continue doing the things he loves doing, like taking care of his horses, helping special needs children in Goshen County, spending precious time with his family, and enjoying all the little things that life has to offer.

GERING – Craig Schadwinkel finished up his teaching duties in Goshen County on Oct. 28 before heading to his home, located just south of Gering.

It was about 5 o’clock when he got home, and with a little sunlight still available, he spent a few minutes feeding and bedding down his eight horses and two ponies.

After that, he went inside the house to take a quick shower. He felt fine, but when he reached to grab a shirt that had fallen on the ground, he said he had “a real uneasy feeling.”

“I couldn’t get any air to breathe, and I couldn’t force any air out,” he said. “I also felt pressure in my chest. It scared the heck out of me.”
