‘I’m so happy I decided to go back and get my GED’

Sylvia Lichius grew up wanting to be a nurse just like her mom, Mary Bristol. She did just that, becoming a CNA while attending Scottsbluff High School. Lichius, however, made a decision that she later regretted – dropping out of high school her junior year. But thanks to encouragement from her family, Lichius eventually went back to school to earn her GED, and a few years later, she graduated from UNMC with a nursing degree. She’s now spent the last 18 years working as a RN, including the last 11 years as a RN/chief nursing officer at Morrill County Community Hospital in Bridgeport.

BRIDGEPORT – Growing up, Sylvia Lichius always admired the dedication and compassion her mom, Mary Bristol, showed as a registered nurse.

Lichius often heard how special her mom was by other health care workers and even some patients that Bristol had taken care of.

“I’d be in a store, and someone would come over and say, ‘Oh, your mom is so amazing,’ or ‘She saved these people’s lives,’ or ‘She’s taught me so much,’” Lichius said. “People would always comment about how great a nurse she is.”

Lichius hoped to make an impact as a nurse someday, too, just like her mom, who’s been a RN for about 40 years and is currently working at Chimney Rock Medical Center in Bayard.
