‘I’m still here, and it feels amazing’

After struggling to keep up with her young grandchildren on their hikes in the Black Hills, Wanda Maloney of Hay Springs learned she had stage 4 lung cancer in January 2018. Maloney, however, vowed to do everything she could to beat cancer, and after going through chemo treatments for two years, she learned she was in remission on March 28. She said she feels blessed to beat cancer, and her focus now is on enjoying every second she’s alive.

HAY SPRINGS – After eating breakfast one morning in July 2017 at the cabin she had rented in Rochford, South Dakota – a community that’s located in the middle of Black Hills National Forest – Wanda Maloney and her grandkids decided to go hiking.

The grandkids said they wanted to climb a steep hill not too far from their cabin. Maloney, who had done a lot of hiking in her lifetime, was ready for the challenge.

About halfway up the hill, however, Maloney had to stop. She felt weak, and she struggled to catch her breath. She had to sit down and rest. She told her grandkids to carry on up the hill.

“I just didn’t feel like I had an ounce of energy left in my body,” she said. “I hadn’t really felt like that before.”
