Kelly Fiesterman of Scottsbluff was close to earning her nursing degree when she was diagnosed with breast cancer eight years ago. She stayed upbeat and determined, though, and she beat cancer and graduated from WNCC less than a year later. She’s now been working as a RN for the last 7 years, and she feels blessed to be able to help and inspire other people who are battling cancer.

SCOTTSBLUFF – Kelly Fiesterman felt happy and relaxed as she walked her dog one evening in July 2011.
She had completed about three years of nursing school and was ready to start her final year of school before graduating from Western Nebraska Community College with an ADN degree, a degree that would allow her to fulfill her desire to help people as a registered nurse.
After finishing her walk, Fiesterman lay down on her living room floor, petting her dog as she thought about the upcoming school year. She was 47 years old at the time, and the thought of graduating soon filled her with joy.
“I felt like God was opening doors for me, and I believed that helping people as a RN is what I was meant to do,” she said.
As Fiesterman sat on the floor, her dog raised its paw, gently putting it on one of Fiesterman’s breasts. Fiesterman grimaced, as the small area where the paw touched was tender. It caught Fiesterman by surprise.
“It felt kind of uncomfortable,” she said. “I didn’t know why it felt like that.”
Fiesterman got up and went to take a shower.
“That’s when I noticed that I had lump on my breast,” she said.
