Kathy Dye of Alliance has always enjoyed quilting as a hobby. However, her hobby turned into a big passion a few years ago, when she began helping Quilts of Valor, a foundation that honors and celebrates both past and current military members with specially-made quilts. Dye became so passionate about the project that she and her daughter, Alyssa Dye, helped create the first Quilts of Valor chapter in the Panhandle in 2018. Since then, the group has presented more than 300 quilts to veterans and current military members.

ALLIANCE – Kathy Dye of Alliance was excited in 2015 when her niece and nephew, who were attending high school in eastern Nebraska at the time, asked her if she would be willing to help sew some quilt tops for a community service project they were working on as part of their involvement in 4-H and the Family Career and Community Leaders of American organization.
The community service project consisted of making quilts for the Quilts of Valor Foundation, whose mission is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing quilts.
Although Dye didn’t know much about Quilts of Valor at that time, she was still happy to chip in because she’s always loved to quilt and also because she knew her time and effort would be going toward a good cause.
“I could tell that my niece and nephew were pretty passionate about doing it, so that got me interested in helping out and learning more about Quilts of Valor,” Dye said. “As I became more involved in the foundation, I started realizing how many veterans I knew personally and how much these quilts mean to the people receiving them.”
