‘It’s made me realize how precious life really is’

John Phillips of Sidney wasn’t used to being sick, feeling limited to what he could do, or having to rely on other people for help. But that’s the situation he found himself in when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in January. At first, he ‘kind of gave up on life,’ but over time, his attitude and desire to fight through his adversity completely changed, and he recently celebrated the news that his cancer is now in remission. Although it’s been a tough journey, he said it’s one that’s also been a blessing to him in many ways.

SIDNEY – John Phillips of Sidney describes himself as someone who loves to stay busy, whether it’s running his business, doing projects at home, volunteering in the community, or participating in activities with his family.

He feels like he doesn’t have time to get sick and, fortunately, for most of his life, he’s remained pretty healthy.

That changed in January, though, when the 63-year Phillips learned that he had inoperable, grade five prostate cancer.

“Honestly, when all of that started happening, I kind of gave up on life,” he said. “I just felt like I was through. I was used to being a very active, healthy person – I hardly ever got sick – so [finding out he had cancer] was really tough.”
