‘I’ve learned to love myself just the way I am’

Yajahira Juarez, a junior at Scottsbluff High School, was born with only one arm. However, she hasn’t let that keep her from being independent, participating in activities like sports and orchestra, going through life with a positive attitude, or being an inspiration to other people who face challenges.

SCOTTSBLUFF – Many years ago, Yajahira Juarez used to wonder how her life would be different if she had two arms.

The 16-year-old Juarez, who’s in her junior year at Scottsbluff High School, was born with just one arm – her left arm. Her right arm ends at about the spot where her elbow would be.

“I used to think about all the things that I could do if I had both of my arms and how my life would be different,” she said.

There were times when she couldn’t help but feel frustrated – even angry – when there was something she couldn’t do because she had only one arm.

“I would have a hard time doing my hair, so I would get really mad,” she said. “I would pull my hair because I couldn’t do it.”
