KIMBALL – Arturo Fernandez, a senior at Kimball High School, has been named First State Bank’s Male Student of the Week. He’s involved in choir, show choir, One Act, speech, yearbook, Kimball Prevention Coalition, and Interact Club. He’s also involved in the youth group at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Kimball.
Q: You’re involved in quite a few activities. Which one do you enjoy the most?
FERNANDEZ: “Show Choir because I like to sing and dance.”
Q: How many years have you been involved in Show Choir?
FERNANDEZ: “This will be my fourth year in high school, and I also did it in junior high.”
Q: What are your other interests and hobbies?
FERNANDEZ: “I like to go hunting and fishing.”
Q: Where do you like to go fishing?
FERNANDEZ: “Just around Kimball.”
Q: What kind of hunting do you do?
FERNANDEZ: “I’m a deer hunter.”
Q: During your educational career, which teacher has made the biggest influence on you?
FERNANDEZ: “Mrs. [Christine] Lewis, the Spanish teacher.”
Q: Have you lived in Kimball your entire life?
FERNANDEZ: “Yes, I have.”
Q: How much have you enjoyed growing up in the Kimball area?
FERNANDEZ: “It’s been good. I’m used to it. It’s nice.”
Q: What do you and your friends enjoy doing for fun in the Kimball area?
FERNANDEZ: “Going to the park with friends or sometimes going to watch a movie or going to the bowling alley.”
Q: To you, how important is school and getting excellent grades?
FERNANDEZ: “Well, at the beginning of high school, I didn’t really care much about my grades. But as I got older, I realized how important grades are, so I started focusing a lot more on my grades and trying a lot harder in my classes.”
Q: What are your plans after you graduate from high school?
FERNANDEZ: “I plan to attend WNCC in Scottsbluff to get a welding degree.”
Q: Why did you decide to pursue a welding degree?
FERNANDEZ: “My freshman year, I took a welding class, and since then, I’ve really enjoyed welding.”
Q: Why did you decide to go to WNCC?
FERNANDEZ: “It really wasn’t a hard decision. I chose that college because I’ll be closer to my family.”
Q: What is your favorite TV show?
FERNANDEZ: “The Walking Dead.”
Q: Up to this point, what do you think is your biggest accomplishment in life?
FERNANDEZ: “I think just becoming the person I am today. I care about my grades, and I like being kind to people.”
Q: In your opinion, who is the kindest student at Kimball High School this year?
FERNANDEZ: “I would say Alex Flores. He’s been my best friend since fourth grade. I really enjoy being around him. He’s nice to everyone.”
Q: What is your favorite restaurant in Kimball?
FERNANDEZ: “The Diner.”
Q: What’s the coolest place you’ve been to in the WyoBraska area?
FERNANDEZ: “Probably the Pine Bluffs area. It’s a neat area, and sometimes I’ll go ride horses with my friends there.”
Q: Do you have any siblings?
FERNANDEZ: “I do. I have a 9-year-old brother, Giovanni, and a 5-year-old sister, Stephanni.”
