KIMBALL – Raven Johnson, a senior at Kimball High School, is Nspire Today!’s Female Student of the Month for October, sponsored by 16th Empire Restaurant in Scottsbluff. She’s involved in choir, show choir, Interact Club, cross country, cheerleading, and track and field. Johnson ranks second academically in her class at KHS. She’s enlisted in the National Guard, and she plans to start basic training next August. After basic training, she’ll continue her six-year contract with the National Guard. During that time, she also plans to attend a four-year college. Her parents are Laura and Kyle Johnson. For being named a Student of the Month, Raven will receive a gift certificate for a free meal at 16th Empire Restaurant.
Q: How has your senior year of school been going?
JOHNSON: “It’s been going really good. I don’t have too many hard classes. Really, the only hard class I have is trigonometry online, and the rest of my classes are mostly home economics.”
Q: Has it been hard to excel in the classroom while also participating in a lot of activities?
JOHNSON: “A little bit, but it hasn’t been too bad. I’m a big procrastinator, so sometimes I’ll leave things until the last minute. But that’s how I work best – under pressure.”
Q: What is your favorite activity at school?
JOHNSON: “Definitely track or cheerleading. I’ve been in cheerleading since my freshman year. I love the atmosphere. I love the dances and stunts we do, and my teammates and coaches make it absolutely amazing to be in that environment. In track, I compete in three events: the 200, 4×100 relay and pole vault. The one I enjoy the most is pole vault because I’m the only girl pole vaulter in our school, and I was only 6 inches away from making it to state two years ago. Unfortunately, the last track season got cancelled [because of COVID-19].” Editor’s note: Raven’s career-best height in the pole vault in a meet is 8-6. Her best height in practice is 9-6.
