The Downtown Scottsbluff Association and the City of Scottsbluff will be holding the Second Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration in the 18th Street Plaza and on Broadway Thursday, May 5th from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Activities will include a variety of kid’s games including piñata breaking, face painting and a Community Canvas with jars to paint (Jarritos de barro) sponsored by West Nebraska Arts Center. Festivities also include a Window Decorating Contest, Car Show, Mexican Market, and Salsa Contest.
The $25.00 market vendor fee and proceeds from the kid’s games will go toward scholarships for the Cinco de Mayo king and queen pageant winners. The pageant will be held on Friday, May 6th at 7:00 p.m. at the Guadalupe Center.
Two local bands, Animo Norte and Los Peladitos de Durango will play and between bands, the Los Guadalupanos Folkloric Dancers will perform. Rosita’s, Pepa’s, Las Delcias, Sanchos Corn, Rosalinda’s, Sweet V’s and Lemon Love will be on hand with their delicious food and beverages available for purchase. Rosita’s margaritas and Flyover Brewery beer will be available to adults over 21 years of age with valid identification.
Broadway between 17th and 18th Streets will be closed to make room for the Mexican Market event. The market will include a variety of local vendors with items available for purchase and non-profit organizations with informational materials.
Broadway between 18th and 19th Streets will also be closed to make room for the car show. Attendees will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite car with a “People’s Choice” trophy awarded to the winner.
The NEXT Young Professionals will have a booth set up selling Loteria cards for $10 to encourage attendees to support the local vendors and food trucks. Half of the proceeds will benefit the Cinco de Mayo Scholarship Pageant and a drawing for the remaining cash prize will be held on Friday, May 6th at the Guadalupe Center.
Cinco de Mayo festivities continue on Saturday, May 7th with the Grand Marshall Presentation and parade on East Overland beginning at 10:00 a.m. followed by food and entertainment at the Guadalupe Center.
